Step away from the wax. And the pomade. And the heavily conditioning shampoo. Marcy Cona, global director of color and style for Clairol, says the ideal canvas is product-free hair that’s gone a day or two without washing, because it absorbs color more readily. So try to plan your hair coloring schedule accordingly. “What you want is for hair to be ready for, and responsive to, the pigments in dye,” says Cona.
Passing on gels, hairsprays or mousse on “Dye Day” is also a good idea. “Avoid using heavy hair styling products because they tend to close the cuticle down,” says Cona. When the cuticle is closed, it’s harder for pigment to penetrate the hair strand. And when you do shampoo (a day or two before coloring), use a clarifying formula, which will remove dirt, oil, and any other buildup on strands. “Overly conditioning products aren’t great because they can seal the cuticle,” says Cona.
