Q

How Do I Use Concealer to Cover Dark Under Eye Circles?

I have really dark under eye circles, but when I use concealer to cover them up, it gives me “raccoon eyes” in photographs — bright white circles under and around my eyes. How can I find the right concealer for my olive skin and avoid the "raccoon-eye" effect?

    Molly’s Advice
    A

With your olive complexion, choose a concealer in a color one shade lighter than your natural skin-tone. “The raccoon look often happens when women use a color that’s too light for their skin,” says CoverGirl makeup artist Molly Stern. It’s safe to say that if you’re getting a raccoon-eye effect on film, it’s there in person as well. But don’t worry – help is on the way. Stern’s secret weapon for fighting dark shadows is rooted in the basics of color theory: a primer with a “yellow base to counteract darkness and purple tones.” You can make under-eye circles virtually disappear by dabbing on Simply Ageless Corrector COVERGIRL SIMPLY AGELESS CORRECTOR #230 UNCARDEDCoverGirl & Olay Simply Ageless Corrector - 230Neutralizes the look of dark circles under your eyes with special yellow intensive pigments.Learn More|Add to Beauty Kit  before you apply concealer. “The makeup gurus created the Corrector specifically for people with super-dark circles,” says Stern.

Another pro tip: Once you’ve primed your skin, apply the concealer to the darkest areas under your eyes and blend outwards using your pinky or ring finger (or a sponge). The skin under your eyes is delicate, so use a very light touch.

Because dark under eye circles can make you look tired and older, avoid cakey concealers that could settle into creases and accentuate fine lines. Opt for a creamy concealer like the Simply Ageless Concealer COVERGIRL SIMPLY AGELESS CONCEALER VERY LIGHT #205 UNCARDEDCoverGirl & Olay Simply Ageless Concealer - Very LightThe concealer has an Olay Regenerist Serum that stays suspended over fine lines and wrinkles to cover imperfections. Dark under eye circles can be hereditary and can sometimes be attributed to veins and blue undertones showing through translucent layers of skin. There may be other factors behind dark shadows: “Dehydration can cause dark circles,” says Stern. “It’s incredible how much drinking water can help.” Fatigue can also be a cause of dark circles, so be sure to get your beauty sleep.
